Their primary responsibility is ensuring that every package and letter gets delivered to the correct address within their assigned area.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Mail Carrier organizes and sorts all classes of mail in delivery order for their designated route.
- They process undeliverable mail according to postal rules and regulations.
- They deliver mail to both businesses and residences on their assigned route.
- The Mail Carrier collects mail from relay boxes and roadside mailboxes when necessary.
- They track deliveries using a handheld electronic scanner as instructed.
- They are responsible for handling payments and receipts for custom fees, postage-due, and C.O.D items.
- The Mail Carrier returns all collected mail to the post office at the end of their route.
- They provide customers with change of address forms and other necessary postal documents.
- The Mail Carrier may also take on general clerical responsibilities as needed.
- Maintaining a clean, neat, and professional appearance, including wearing the approved uniform, is a key requirement for the role.
Functional Purpose
Responsible for collecting and delivering mail by vehicle or on foot within an assigned route, maintaining positive public relations with customers, understanding basic postal regulations, laws, products, and services, and having a general knowledge of the area’s geography.
Employment Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old, or 16 with a high school diploma.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or a citizen of American Samoa or another U.S. territory.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check, drug test, and medical evaluation.
- A valid state driver’s license, a clean driving record, and at least two years of driving experience are required.
- Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.
Salary Range
Up to $25.50 per hour paid bi-weekly
Examination Requirements
Candidates must pass the Virtual Entry Assessment – MC (474) for Mail Carriers. Instructions for the assessment will be sent via email once the candidate is invited to take it.
Background Check
The Postal Inspection Service conducts a criminal background check using U.S. information sources, including FBI fingerprint checks, and state and county records. The investigation covers a five-year period, reviewing any location within the U.S. or its territories where the candidate lived, worked, or attended school.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be physically capable of performing the job duties efficiently, with or without reasonable accommodation. Tasks may involve extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and reaching. Candidates may also need to lift and handle mail containers weighing up to the maximum allowable limit.
