Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Rural Mail Carrier sorts all classes of mail in delivery order for their assigned route.
- They handle undeliverable mail in accordance with postal regulations and laws.
- The Rural Mail Carrier delivers mail to residences along their designated route using a personal vehicle that meets USPS specifications.
- They track deliveries with a portable electronic scanner as instructed.
- The Rural Mail Carrier collects payments and receipts for custom fees, postage-due, and C.O.D. items, which may vary by route.
- They assist customers with change of address forms and provide general postal information as needed.
- The Rural Mail Carrier maintains accurate records of all deliveries and collections.
- They may also take on general clerical tasks as required.
Functional Purpose
Responsible for collecting and delivering mail along an assigned rural route using a personal vehicle, maintaining positive public relations with customers, having a basic understanding of postal regulations, laws, products, and services, and being generally familiar with the assigned route.
Employment Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old or 16 with a high school diploma.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or citizen of American Samoa or another U.S. territory.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical evaluation.
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record, meeting USPS safe driving requirements.
- Must be able to operate and maintain a personal vehicle that meets USPS specifications (right-hand drive is optional).
- Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.
Salary Range
Up to $28 per hour (varies based on route evaluation)
Examination Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete the Rural Carrier Assessment (RCA) exam and receive a passing rating. Instructions for the assessment will be sent via email once the candidate is invited to take it.
Background Check
Same as Mail Carrier (City).
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be physically capable of efficiently performing the job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. Responsibilities may include lifting mail trays weighing up to 70 lbs, frequent bending and reaching, and maneuvering within a vehicle.
