Compensation for these positions starts at $16.25 per hour and can reach up to $23.56, depending on the specific location.

These dedicated workers are responsible for carefully sorting mail and packages, which can take place in smaller branch locations or large central facilities.

The role requires efficient and accurate performance in a fast-paced environment, often involving the use of both manual and automated processing equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Mail Processor uses various sort programs or manual distribution schematics to sort inbound and outbound mail items.
  • The Mail Processor organizes the mail processing work area to ensure that machinery, labels, bins, and other tools are properly in place.
  • The Mail Processor receives sorted mail items and distributes them into designated bins for further processing.
  • The Mail Processor loads mail items into automated machines as needed.
  • The Mail Processor removes non-letter mail pieces, such as parcels, rolls, and oddly shaped items, from letter mail.
  • The Mail Processor manages the flow of mail to ensure a steady feed into processing equipment.
  • The Mail Processor ensures the operation of processing equipment by clearing jams and notifying maintenance when necessary.
  • The Mail Processor provides assistance at the public window for non-monetary transactions as needed.
  • The Mail Processor performs additional duties as required.

Functional Purpose

Responsible for performing various clerical duties related to mail processing while operating both manual and automated equipment for sorting and distribution purposes.

Employment Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old, or 16 with a high school diploma.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or a citizen of American Samoa or another U.S. territory.
  • Must have the ability to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical assessment.
  • Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.

Salary Range

Up to $19.56 per hour paid bi-weekly

Examination Requirements

Candidates must successfully complete the Virtual Entry Assessment – MP (476) for Mail Processors and receive a passing rating. Instructions for the assessment will be sent via email once the candidate is invited to take it.

Background Check

The Postal Inspection Service conducts a criminal background check using only U.S. information and data resources, including FBI checks, fingerprinting, and state and county records. This investigation covers a five-year period, examining any locations where the candidate has lived, worked, or attended school within the U.S. or its territories.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be physically capable of efficiently performing the job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. Responsibilities may include extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and reaching, as well as lifting mail containers weighing up to 70 pounds.
