Window Clerks are often seen as the welcoming “face” of the USPS.
These dedicated individuals work at various branches and interact directly with the public.
Starting wages for Window Clerks range from $16.25 to $23.56 per hour, depending on the location.
These invaluable employees handle tasks such as selling stamps, envelopes, and other postal supplies. They also manage postage processing, generate money orders, assist with passport services, and oversee all other offerings provided by the post office.
This role requires the ability to efficiently manage a variety of tasks while maintaining a friendly demeanor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Window Service Clerk greets customers and assists them in selecting products and services.
- The Window Service Clerk manages retail window operations, including sales and customer service.
- The Window Service Clerk ensures adequate inventory of retail products is maintained.
- The Window Service Clerk cashes postal money orders for both foreign and domestic transactions.
- The Window Service Clerk processes customer transactions, including purchases and returns.
- The Window Service Clerk maintains store appearance by replenishing product racks and displays.
- The Window Service Clerk is responsible for maintaining product inventory levels.
- The Window Service Clerk ensures that stamp vending machines and postage meters are stocked and operational.
- The Window Service Clerk must maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance, including wearing the approved uniform.
- The Window Service Clerk performs additional duties as assigned.
Functional Purpose
Responsible for completing various tasks to support the sales of products and services while adhering to postal procedures, regulations, and laws. Ensures respectful and effective public relations with customers.
Employment Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old, or 16 with a high school diploma.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or a citizen of American Samoa or another U.S. territory.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical assessment.
- Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.
Salary Range
Up to $19.45 per hour paid bi-weekly
Examination Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete the Virtual Entry Assessment – CS (477) for Customer Service Clerks and receive a passing rating. Instructions for the assessment will be sent via email once the candidate is invited to take it.
Background Check
The Postal Inspection Service conducts a criminal background check using only U.S. information and data resources, such as FBI checks, fingerprinting, and state and county records. This investigation spans five years, reviewing any locations where the candidate has lived, worked, or attended school within the U.S. or its territories.
