Mail Handlers play a vital role in the operations of postal facilities, delivering essential services.
Starting pay for these positions ranges from $15.25 to $22.47 per hour, depending on the specific location.
These dedicated postal workers are responsible for loading and unloading postal items within the facility, both before and after the sorting and processing of mail.
These roles require significant physical exertion, as packages can weigh up to 70 pounds each, and rolling containers can reach weights of up to 1,500 pounds.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The Mail Handler sorts all classes of mail received from delivery vehicles and conveyors for processing at other units.
- The Mail Handler delivers mail designated for different distribution areas, which may involve operating a forklift.
- The Mail Handler unloads mail items from sacks and pouches, loading them into appropriate containers for processing.
- The Mail Handler operates cancelling machines, cancels stamps on designated items, and delivers mail from machines to the assigned distribution area.
- The Mail Handler is responsible for using other equipment and machinery as needed.
- The Mail Handler provides assistance in the supply room and slip room as required.
- The Mail Handler must maintain a clean, neat, and professional appearance, including wearing the approved uniform.
Functional Purpose
Responsible for loading, unloading, and handling mail in bulk.
Employment Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with a high school diploma.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or citizen of American Samoa or another U.S. territory.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screening, and medical assessment.
- Must be registered with Selective Service, if applicable.
Salary Range
Up to $18.64 per hour paid bi-weekly
Examination Requirements
Candidates must successfully complete the Virtual Entry Assessment – MH (475) for Mail Handlers and receive a passing rating. Instructions for the assessment will be sent via email once the candidate is invited to take it.
Background Check
The Postal Inspection Service conducts a criminal background check using only U.S. information and data resources, including FBI checks, fingerprinting, and state and county records. This investigation covers a five-year period, reviewing any location where the candidate has lived, worked, or attended school within the U.S. or its territories.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be physically capable of efficiently performing the job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation. Responsibilities may include extended periods of standing, walking, pushing, and reaching, as well as handling mail containers weighing up to 70 pounds.
